2 – Citadelle and Sans Souci

Featured photos, June 13, 2011:

“The Citadelle and Sans Souci palace, September 2010″

The Citadelle, northern Haiti, September 2010. Photo by Pete Sabo.

I selected these two photos because they are from Haiti’s earliest history as an independent state: the Citadelle La Ferrere and Sans Souci palace.

Sans Souci palace, Milot, Haiti, September 2010. Photo by Pete Sabo.

Both were built after Haiti gained independence from France in 1804.  Like the Presidential Palace in Port au Prince in 2010, Sans Souci was damaged by a severe earthquake in 1842.  It was never rebuilt.
